For their hard-core under-18 fans, of course, the Backstreet Boys are all that, and a bag of chips and free soda to boot. Millennium, the follow-up to the quintet’s umpteen-million-selling debut, offers more reasons why so many of the rest of us have found a place for them in our hearts. The Boys’ ultrapackaged look and up-to-date production underscore the quality of their best tracks; only a churl could deny that “I Want It That Way” is one fine radio-aimed declaration of love, or that “Larger Than Life” makes the most of its Daft Punk sample and double-edged acknowledgment of Backstreet followers’ loyalty. On Never Gone, the Backstreet Boys crib from the pop foundation they helped establish. Like a lot of smart popsters on the rebound, the reunited fab five broach their return by borrowing from the current hit makers. Even after a four-year hiatus, the flecks of new influence won’t matter a bit to the fans. The boys’ signature sugar-coated yearning softens every song to a melty consistency, and the lyrics haven’t lost any of their babe-magnet pull. “It’s all so dark and mysterious/When the one you want doesn’t want you,” sing the chiseled Lotharios on “Siberia.” And on the final title track, a swirling crescendo sums up the sentiments of millions of heartsick, former teen devotees: “Never gone, never far/In my heart is where you are.” -Tammy La Gorce

A funny thing happens around track three of Ten, Brian McKnight’s intricate, nuanced, and very grown-up follow-up to 2005′s Gemini: he starts sounding like Daryl Hall. It’s a blip overall, but it’s indicative of McKnight’s chameleon-like way with an R&B song. At times he stands unapologetically in the shadows of Marvin Gaye (see “Shoulda Been Lovin’ You”), at times he tries on Luther Vandross’s silky tones (“Don’t Take Your Love Away”), and at times he leans in a direction that seems carved from a cross-section of the two (“Holdin’ On”). The dip into Daryl Hall is a neat addition-a cool swerve that should protect McKnight from predictability charges. More than that, it demonstrates a clear-eyed artistic approach. It doesn’t necessarily make him a smooth-singing maverick, though. Tim & Bob, the studio wizards who helped score hits for Bobby Valentino, Donell Jones, and others, cowrote four of Ten’s strongest tracks, the radio hit “Used To Be My Girl” among them. And Rascal Flatts, the country act, teams up for the flag-waving, well-intentioned “Red, White, and Blue.” McKnight’s maneuvers, shot through with versatility, haven’t failed him yet; on a scale of one to ten, Ten rates a nine. -Tammy La Gorce

Stacy Kent has a voice like the great Dinah Washington’s, immediate in its grab of the ear and incisive in its tonal shape. Kent’s middle range has a washing quality that pushes the edges forward, even as the edges lilt upward or warble excitedly. Kent and her British band-virtual unknowns prior to this debut-are sure to splash big, with their spare ballad approach (as on Duke Ellington and Bob Russell’s “I Didn’t Know About You”) or their rumbling swing on George Gershwin’s “They All Laughed.” Pianist David Newton glides across melodies with a light touch but then launches sparkling solos full of funky harmonics-hear “The Tender Trap” for Kent and Newton’s mix of charming voice and odd pianism. Featuring a collection of classic standards, many of which were first made famous in Broadway musicals. Morrison turned to legendary producer Phil Ramone (Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett), along with GRAMMY Award-winning producer Gregg Field, to create the 12 songs featured on the album. The collection marks the first release from 222 Records, the newly formed label from Adam Levine.

Morrison’s new album of standards is a salute to the music that means the most to him and follows on the release of his 2011 self-titled solo pop album. On Where It All Began, it was paramount for Morrison that he put his own stamp on the songs, either by coming up with new tempos and arrangements or by recreating the song in a way it had never been imagined before. Pointing out that alto nido translates from the Spanish as high nest, Laswell explains that Three flights up implies that you re on your way to a high nest, even if you re not quite there yet. Whereas Through Toledo was intimate and autobiographical for the most part, the EP reflected the transitional time of coming out of it, Laswell explains. With this album, I wanted to do something really big sounding a little bit bigger than I am, really. In a sense, the album was shaped around the fact that 2007 was a difficult and strange year for just about all of my friends and family members.

With his elegantly expressive piano technique and feathery acoustic guitar work, Greg has drawn comparisons to such reputable songsmiths as Jeff Buckley, Coldplay, Ron Sexsmith and Radiohead. His intense lyrics and sweeping melodies amplify to create an eloquent sound that matches his hypnotic and haunting tenor.

As with his prior Vanguard releases, Three Flights From Alto Nido was written, recorded and produced at his home studios in San Diego, Dana Point and Santa Ana, CA. The task of mixing the album was placed in the hands of Greg Collins who has mixed, produced and/or engineered tracks for Grammy winners U2, Joss Stone and the Dixie Chicks as well as many other notable acts.

Grateful singers know that Fred Astaire virtually defined the Great American Songbook, beginning in the ’30s with his legendary film collaborations with George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Jerome Kern. Stacey Kent pays tribute to Astaire in Let Yourself Go, the third stellar album for the London-based, New York-bred vocalist whose voice resembles a lighter version of Dinah Washington’s. Kent shines on both gorgeous ballads (“They Can’t Take That Away from Me”) and solid swingers (“Shall We Dance”), and adds an easy bossa nova beat to “‘S Wonderful.” Trading lines with her is Kent’s saxophonist-husband Jim Tomlinson, who fronts the solid band. Flexible with the rhythms yet never straying far from the melodies, Kent also pays perhaps the ultimate compliment to many of these songs by including the oft-neglected verses. Tony Bennett’s 1993 Fred Astaire tribute was his breakthrough to the mainstream music scene. Perhaps Let Yourself Go will be the U.S. breakthrough for Stacey Kent. -David Horiuchi

Producer/songwriter Greg Laswell returns with his third full-length release for Vanguard records, Take a Bow, which both closes and opens another chapter in the California native’s journey about love, loss and rebirth. Following his critically acclaimed fall 2009 Covers EP (one of Filter magazine’s “10 best of the year”), Take a Bow features 12 original compositions including the first single “Take Everything” and a new version of the song “Off I Go,” which was featured in the 2009 season finale of Grey’s Anatomy (one of over six placements he’s had on this show alone). All songs produced by Greg Laswell, except for “In Front Of Me” produced by Dan Romer.

This album has been a unique project in my life; to be able to go back and sing the songs of the times when the recording technology had no knowledge of the digital world.

The rerecording of these songs has meant to once again experience the excitement and nerves from the first time I took them to the studio, to remember the unforgettable moments collaborating with the great artists,

technicians and engineers, and to relive the emotion that the people have given me in the concerts. But “1″ has not been the result of the nostalgia that 43 years on stage can give. Quite the contrary. This album is the result of the four decades in which I have tried to learn to be a better artist and to make the most of the experience which has brought me into contact with such diverse and enriching people and cultures.

It is an album born from the desire to better sing the most representative songs of these years and to include the contribution of new recording technologies. I believe this is the best way to thank the public for their generosity and love, and for being the great motivation and power driving my career.
