Back to Basics, Christina Aguilera’s first disc in four years, refines and clarifies the-let’s call it “sexy”-aura surrounding this platinum firebrand. Here, the best belter in a class that counts Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears on its roll call has turned her attention to love songs: the supercharged and ubiquitous first single “Ain’t No Other Man,” for one, and the hushed stunner “Save Me from Myself” for another. That doesn’t mean she’s foresworn being nasty, though. Dive deep into this set, past the gorgeous crackle that frames the old-school jazz-, blues-, and soul-inspired tracks on the first disc, and you’ll reach a playful and familiar raunch; “Candyman” celebrates a “one-stop shop” who “makes the panties drop” to a boogie-woogie beat, and “Nasty Naughty Boy” sends out a heated, big-beated invitation to “sip on my champagne/Cause I’m gonna give you a little taste/Of the sugar below my waist.” Thoughtful listeners should snap out of their fascination with Xtina’s undiminished yet newly un-tramp-like sexuality, though, because what they’ll really want to focus on throughout these 22 tracks is the honest-to-God artistry. While the rock producer Linda Perry helps disc two pop in interesting and unexpected ways (check the muffled blues number “I Got Trouble” and “Mercy on Me,” an obvious nod to Fiona Apple), DJ Premier, a mainstay on Jay-Z and Nas projects, pipes a batch of aural high-fives into the nostalgia-bitten first disc (the deep-down funk of “Back in the Day,” the strut-strut early hip-hop sound of “Still Dirrty”). Their nudges aside, though, Back to Basics is all Aguilera’s baby-she executive-produced, and she’s found herself artistically. Nobody would argue, in fact, if she swiveled around the chorus to “Ain’t No Other Man,” written for her husband, and aimed it at herself: “You got soul, you got class/You got style, you’re bada-.” -Tammy La Gorce

When Slaid Cleaves wrote the title track for his new album “Still Fighting The War,” he had a specific subject in mind. Inspired by a Pulitzer-winning series of photos on an Iraq War veteran suffering from PTSD, he sought to address the plight of those returning from war and struggling to readjust to society. But as the album progressed, the phrase “still fighting the war” began to take on a broader meaning. “In the past, when I would start writing a new batch of songs a theme would emerge early on. My process this time was just to write as many good songs as I could, not concerning myself with how they all fit together,” he says. “But when I began to settle on the songs and the sequence of the album a theme of perseverance through hard times revealed itself. It runs through the album, as it carries into all of our lives. The recession’s over, but these aren’t exactly happy days. We’re all still struggling, we all keep pushing along.” Once called “one of the finest songwriters from Texas” by the New York Times, Slaid knows a thing or two himself about perseverance. It’s been 22 years since he first moved from his home state of Maine to Austin, TX, where he started his career playing open mics and barbeque joints around town before earning international acclaim for his “powerfully direct” (NPR) songwriting style. While many of the songs on “Still Fighting The War” focus on struggle and pain, the album, as a whole, is far from morose. Much like Hank Williams or Woody Guthrie, Slaid juxtaposes tales of working class woes (“Rust Belt Fields,” “Welding Burns”) with lighthearted wittiness and tongue-in-cheek humor (“Whim of Iron,” “Texas Love Song”), adding a sense of optimism and resilience that turns sad stories into a source of inspiration instead of despair. “It’s fun to watch an audience enjoy something light hearted between the workplace disaster songs and tragic love stories,” he says. After all these years, it’s that spirit that keeps Slaid “fighting the war” and making some of the best music of his career. “There’s no better satisfaction than creating something new and then connecting with people and finding that your work moves them in a profound way. That never gets old.” “Still Fighting The War” is out June 4 on Music Road Records, and was produced by Scrappy Jud Newcomb, Lloyd Maines and Mark Hallman. Slaid Cleaves will hit the road for a national tour this summer.

If U2 hadn’t already released a pair of career retrospective discs, this British trio’s second album would neatly do the trick in one. Not much of a surprise since Keane spent a good deal of time supporting Bono and company following the release their breakthrough debut, Hopes and Fears. From the melancholic “Crystal Ball” to the sinisterly beautiful “Is It Any Wonder?” (a blatant homage to “Zoo Station”), Keane have perfected their forebear’s dark stadium-rock formula on their second album, all the more miraculous considering it was once again done without guitars. If Under the Iron Sea sounds considerably edgier than its predecessor, that’s because it was recorded while the band was on the verge of splitting. But the friction has also given Keane a renewed sense of purpose, breaking the mid-tempo monotony with vibrant material such as “Nothing in My Way” and “Try Again”: soaring songs that make the band sound unsinkable. -Aidin Vaziri

Brad Paisley’s previous release, Mud on the Tires, was the sort of landmark album nearly every artist has difficulty topping. Not so this time. On Time Well Wasted, Paisley’s voice-never overwhelmed by overmixed instruments (a problem dogging many current vocalists)-remains keenly focused. There’s quality material in abundance, heavy on originals and delightfully quirky bonus tracks. The album’s first hit, Paisley’s self-penned “Alcohol,” has the potential to become a lasting anthem in a genre where booze songs long ago became an art form. Guy Clark’s “Out in the Parkin’ Lot,” a duet with Alan Jackson, sounds more organic, less contrived than most Music Row pairings. The same applies to “When I Get Where I’m Going,” a spiritual duet with Dolly Parton. As in the past, Paisley’s country-jazz Telecaster prowess (phemonenal on the dazzling instrumental “Time Warp”) remains remarkable, as does his insistence that his sidemen get ample space to shine. Such assets set Paisley apart, as does his ability to make real creativity commercially successful in a Nashville concerned mainly with the latter. -Rich Kienzle
